In Creative Together: Sparking Innovation in the New World of Work, I often refer to the many ways our “voice of judgment,” or what I call the “Inner Critic,” sabotages the expression of our creative potential.

In fact, the Inner Critic can show up pretty much everywhere in our lives. But it is particularly challenging when—in creative pursuits—we encounter obstacles or challenges. These are the “tests” that are bound to show up along any journey of discovery and invention. Here, the Critic is a devious enemy—and must be treated with zero tolerance.

If you’ve ever been tempted to consider your Inner Critic a “friend,” watch this brief video to learn directly from Michael Ray as he shares his perspective on Psyching Out the Critic.

Michael is a professor Emeritus at Stanford and the co-author of the book, Creativity in Business. He created and taught the course by the same name at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford. Learn more about Michael and the history of Creativity in Business course.
